There’s a specific kind of heat that hits New England in July, the kind that makes standing over a stove feel like a personal insult. That’s exactly when a salad stops being a diet food and starts being the smart move: cold, fast, and it doesn’t heat up your kitchen to make.

Why summer is actually the best season for a salad bar

Produce peaks in summer. Tomatoes taste like tomatoes instead of the pale, mealy version you get in February. Cucumbers are crisp instead of soft. That’s the whole advantage of ordering from a place that’s also a produce market: the vegetables going into your salad are the same ones peaking in the store right now, not something that’s been in cold storage since spring.

What to order when it’s hot out

A Greek salad leans into the season hardest, cucumber, tomato, and feta are all doing their best work in July and August. If you want something that actually fills you up without turning on an oven, the Cobb salad is a full meal cold, which matters more than it sounds like when the last thing you want is a hot plate of food.

Cooling off doesn’t stop at the salad

Pair a salad with a smoothie and you’ve got a meal that’s genuinely built for the weather instead of just tolerated in spite of it. It’s the same logic as the salad: real, cold produce, made when you order it, not sitting around losing its texture in the heat.

Planning something outdoors

Cookouts, beach days, and backyard hangouts all hit the same problem: nobody wants to cook in that heat, and everybody still needs to eat. Fresh Party Salads through the catering menu cover a group without anyone standing over a grill.

Check our salad bar for the current lineup, or stop by Westwood or Dorchester and build a plate in person.
